High-Vis Reflective Collars

Preventing night road accidents for stray animals using low-cost, high-visibility reflective bands and safe fitting protocols.

Night Road Safety for Strays

Stray dogs frequently rest on road shoulders or cross unlit streets at night. Vehicle drivers often spot them too late, leading to fatal collisions.

Reflective collars catch vehicle headlights from up to 150 meters away, giving drivers ample reaction time to slow down.

Critical Safety Rules

  • • Two-Finger Fit Rule: Always ensure you can comfortably slide two fingers between the collar and the dog's neck.
  • • Elastic / Breakaway Section: Always include an elastic safety segment so the collar can stretch or slip off if snagged on bushes or fences.
  • • Friendly / Known Dogs Only: Never force a collar on fearful or aggressive strays; collar only dogs you handle regularly.

Assembly Blueprint

1

Prepare Soft Webbing Base

Cut a 1-inch wide strip of durable, soft nylon or cotton webbing to approx 16-20 inches length depending on the dog's size.

2

Affix 3M High-Vis Reflective Tape

Stitch or heavy-duty glue a 3M micro-prismatic reflective tape strip along the center of the webbing strip.

3

Attach Elastic Safety Joint & Buckle

Stitch a 2-inch elastic segment near the closure buckle to ensure breakaway safety under heavy tension.

Required Materials

  • 1" Soft Nylon / Cotton Webbing
  • 3M Micro-prismatic Reflective Tape
